The team from Pips’n’all, share a story that has been six years in the making! Pips’n’all is a super scrumptious, deliciously versatile chilli jam that is made in Kūaotunu, a beautiful wee place in the Coromandel. The team are so proud of their small but mighty chili jam, and it's starting to get a reputation as something people can’t get enough of.
TGFC/ How did you get started?
Pips team/Over six years ago I started growing chillies for a friend (he used to carry fresh chillies in his pocket so he was never caught eating food without them!). Soon enough I had an influx of chillies and was looking for something to do with them.
I grew up in a household where excess fruit and vegetables were always being bottled, pickled and jammed, and always found a certain comfort and satisfaction watching jam bubbling and jars being filled with sticky, jammy yumminess.
When I started experimenting with chilli jam it took me a while to find a flavour profile and consistency I was happy with. I wanted a punch that was unapologetically chilli, and then packed it with garlic and ginger, so it was full of flavour and goodness.
Once I had perfected the recipe, I started making it for friends and family who have been using it on anything from zucchini pie to Christmas gravy. Then my son suggested I start selling it.
TGFC/ It sounds like it has been an interesting few years! When did someone buy your first jar?
Pips team/In August 2023 we sold our first official jar of Pips’n’all.
TGFC/ What makes Pips 'N' All special?
Pips team/ Pips 'N' All chilli jam is incredibly versatile! It's perfect in a pasta sauce, a stir fry, a cheese toastie - even a chocolate cake! It has a unique flavour - a punch of chilli with a little bit of sweetness so the heat doesn't linger too long - which makes it very moorish!
TGFC/ How do you recommend people use Pips’n’all?
Pips team/ It goes great with many things. Some of our suggestions are stir fry, toasties, halloumi, charcuterie platter, pasta, gravy, eggs on toast, seafood, cheese scones, smashed cucumber salad, dressings, chocolate cake - basically anything!
