A Brit, a Kiwi and a Yank enjoying a glass of wine sounds like the beginning of a joke, but in this case it's the interesting story of how three vegans joined forces to create Plant Basics. This Christchurch based producer now create delicious ingredients enjoyed by vegans, vegetarians and people open to trying new things. Read more about Plant Basics in our interview with Laura.
TGFC/ How did you get started?
Laura/ One evening over wine in late 2018, three vegans - a Brit (Dave), a Kiwi (Laura) and a Yank (Paige) - discussed the challenges of beginning to navigate a plant-based diet.
We all agreed that it wasn’t exactly a vegan piece of a cake and that the transition would’ve been a lot easier with a guide or some beginner’s recipes.
From these discussions, Plant Basics was formed to help others interested in a plant-based lifestyle. In 2023, Plant Basics is run from our base in Christchurch with the help of some great friends and family when things get busy.
TGFC/ How long have you been vegan for?
Laura/ I have been vegan since 2017. I grew up on a farm in South Canterbury - so as you can imagine going vegan was quite a surprise to friends and family!
TGFC/ What makes Plant Basics special?
Laura/ Our products are unique, and they make eating vegan accessible and easy. We use compostable packaging and labels and want to help encourage people to try things that are vegan without being judgmental or putting pressure on them to make a lifestyle change.
TGFC/ Do you have a favourite product?
Laura/ Yes, I do. My favourite is Nutritional Yeast. It is such a staple that vegans and non-vegans need in the kitchen. Nutritional Yeast is one of the best cheese alternatives and is packed with B12 and other vitamins. You can sprinkle it on your mashed potato or pasta or use it to cook up a cheese sauce!
TGFC/ What is the most popular product you sell?
Laura/ Our Passionfruit Chia Pudding mix or the Blackcurrant Chia Pudding mix are both hugely popular.
TGFC/ Where can people find Plant Basics in Christchurch?
Laura/ You can find me every Saturday at the Christchurch Farmers Market serving up Chia Pudding cups with fresh fruit and granola otherwise I work full-time for a project management firm, so life is busy.
